About Online Text Editor
This online text editor is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser, so what you write is never uploaded. Open the page and start typing.
It comes in three modes. The main page is a rich text editor with bold, italic, headings, lists, links and quotes. The Online Notepad is a plain text box for quick notes. The Markdown Editor shows your Markdown next to a live preview. Each mode keeps its own text, saved in your browser as you type.
When you are done, download the text as a file or copy it out. Rich text exports as .html or .txt, and the notepad and Markdown modes export as .txt and .md.
How to use Online Text Editor
- Choose a mode: rich text (this page), Online Notepad for plain text, or Markdown Editor for Markdown with a preview.
- Type or paste your text. It is saved in this browser automatically, so a refresh or a closed tab does not lose it.
- In rich text, select words and use the toolbar for bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, headings, quotes, lists, links, undo and redo.
- In the notepad and Markdown modes, use Find and Replace above the box to change a word everywhere, with an optional Match case.
- Use the Download button to save a file, or View HTML in rich text to copy the markup. Clear empties the editor.

Good to know
Which mode to use
Pick rich text when you want a document with some formatting that you can copy into an email or a page. Pick the Online Notepad for lists, scratch notes, copied snippets or anything where formatting would get in the way. Pick Markdown when you write for a platform that uses it, such as a readme, a forum or a notes app.
The three modes do not share text. A note in the notepad does not appear in the Markdown editor, so copy it across if you change your mind.
Limits worth knowing
Your text lives in this browser only. It is not an account document, so it is not on your other devices, and it is gone if you clear site data. Download a file for anything you cannot lose.
The rich text editor uses your browser built-in editing commands, so pasted formatting and some small details can differ between browsers. It does not offer tables, images, fonts or colours. The Markdown preview supports a core set of Markdown, covered on the Markdown Editor page.
Privacy: how it works
- The editor runs in your browser tab. What you write is not sent to Ulkaa or to any other server.
- Your text is saved in your browser local storage, which is how the autosave works. It stays on your device, and it is only there for this browser and this site. Press Clear, or clear site data, to remove it. Anyone with access to your browser profile can read it, so do not leave private notes on a shared computer.
Tips
- Download a copy of anything important. Autosave is a convenience, not a backup.
- Use Clear formatting after pasting from a web page or a Word file to drop styles you do not want.
- Use Find and Replace with Match case on when a word differs only by capitals, such as "US" and "us".
- Keep each mode for one purpose, so you always know where a note is.
