About Citation Generator

This citation generator formats a reference and an in-text citation from the details you type, in APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago (notes and author-date), Harvard, IEEE and Vancouver. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser, so the details of your sources are not uploaded.

It works from manual entry. You pick a source type (book, journal article, website, book chapter or report), fill in the fields and the reference appears as you type, with the right order, punctuation and italics for the style. There is no DOI, ISBN or URL look-up that fills the fields for you, so you copy details from the source yourself. That keeps the page simple and private, and it means the output is only as good as what you type.

Titles are used exactly as you type them. Citation styles expect different capitalisation, such as sentence case for APA titles and title case for MLA and Chicago, so type the title the way your style wants it. A short checklist of what each style needs is in the notes below.

How to use Citation Generator

  1. 1Choose a citation style from the list: APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago notes, Chicago author-date, Harvard, IEEE or Vancouver.
  2. 2Choose the source type: book, journal article, website, book chapter or report. The fields change to match.
  3. 3Add the authors, one name per row. For an organisation, put its name in the last-name box and leave the first name empty.
  4. 4Fill in the title, year, publisher or journal details, and any DOI or URL. Type titles in the capitalisation your style needs.
  5. 5Copy the reference or the in-text citation. The copy keeps italics when you paste into a word processor.
  6. 6Press Add to bibliography to keep the reference in a list, then copy the whole list. It is sorted by author for author-date styles and numbered in citation order for IEEE and Vancouver.

Features

  • Seven styles: APA 7th edition, MLA 9th edition, Chicago 17th (notes and bibliography), Chicago 17th (author-date), Harvard, IEEE and Vancouver.
  • Five source types: book, journal article, website, book chapter and report.
  • The reference list entry and the in-text citation, both ready to copy, with an optional page number for the in-text form.
  • Copy with italics preserved, so a book or journal title stays italic when pasted into Word or Google Docs.
  • Several authors, group authors and editors, with the style rules for joining and shortening them.
  • A bibliography list that sorts alphabetically for author-date styles and numbers entries in order for IEEE and Vancouver, with a one-click copy of the whole list.
  • The bibliography is saved in this browser, so it is there when you come back on the same device. It is never sent anywhere.
  • DOI and URL fields, an accessed date for websites, edition, volume, issue and page ranges.

Worked examples

  • Book: Daniel Kahneman, Thinking, fast and slow, 2011, Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Style: APA 7 → gives Reference: Kahneman, D. (2011). Thinking, fast and slow. Farrar, Straus and Giroux. In text: (Kahneman, 2011, p. 45)

In APA the book title is italic and the page number is added to the in-text form.

  • Journal article by two authors with a DOI. Style: MLA 9 → gives Reference: Smith, Jane, and Rahim Uddin. “Sleep and exam performance in first-year students.” Journal of Educational Psychology, vol. 114, no. 3, 2022, pp. 456-470, https://doi.org/10.1037/edu0000123. In text: (Smith and Uddin 460)

  • Website page with a group author and an accessed date. Style: Harvard → gives Reference: World Health Organization (2022) Physical activity. World Health Organization. Available at: https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/physical-activity (Accessed: 20 October 2026). In text: (World Health Organization, 2022)

Good to know

What the generator does not do

It does not fetch details from a DOI, ISBN or web address, and it does not export to BibTeX, RIS or Word. There is no video source type. You enter the details by hand and copy the result.

It does not change your titles. If your style needs sentence case, type the title in sentence case. Check the output against your course style guide, because instructors and publishers sometimes apply their own rules.

Style notes

Harvard has no single official rulebook. The generator follows the Cite Them Right pattern, and your university may publish small variations. IEEE and Vancouver are numbered styles: the in-text form is a number in citation order, and the list is numbered the same way.

Privacy: how it works

  • The details you type are formatted by code in your browser tab and are never sent to Ulkaa or anyone else. The bibliography list is saved in your own browser storage on this device, and you can clear it with the Clear list button.

Tips

  • Copy details from the source itself, such as the title page of a book or the first page of an article, and not from a search result snippet.
  • Type the DOI without the web address in front of it. The generator adds the correct prefix for the style.
  • For a source with no author, leave the author rows empty. Check the result against your style, because the rule for the title position differs between styles.
  • Add each source to the bibliography as you go, then copy the whole list at the end.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no price, no trial and no credit card. Ulkaa Tool does the work with your own device, so there is no server bill to pass on to you.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and no login. Open the page and use it. An Ulkaa account is not needed for anything on this tool.

Does it run in my browser?

Yes. The details you enter are processed by code running in your browser tab, on your own device.

Is my data uploaded?

No. The details you enter are never sent to Ulkaa or to anyone else. You can check this yourself by watching the Network tab in your browser developer tools while you use the tool.

How do I cite a website in APA 7?

Use the Website source type with APA 7. Enter the author or organisation, the page title, the website name, the date and the URL. The reference gives the author, date, page title in italics, site name and link.

What is the difference between APA and MLA?

APA is an author-date style used widely in the sciences and social sciences. MLA is an author-page style used in the humanities. The order, punctuation and capitalisation of the entries also differ.

Do I need the access date in MLA 9?

It is optional in MLA 9. The generator includes it when you fill in the Accessed date field and leaves it out when you do not.

Does the generator fill in details from a DOI or URL?

No. It works from manual entry, so you type the details from the source. Nothing is looked up online.

What is Harvard referencing?

It is an author-date system: you cite the author and year in the text and list the full details in a reference list at the end. There are many local versions, and this tool follows the Cite Them Right pattern.

Can I export to BibTeX or Word?

No. You can copy a reference or the whole bibliography with italics kept, and paste it into your document.

Is my bibliography saved?

It is saved in your browser on this device so it is there next time, and it is never sent to a server. Clearing your browser data or pressing Clear list removes it.

Is the output always correct?

It follows the common rules of each style, but it is only as accurate as the details you enter. Check it against your style guide before you submit.
