About Essay Spell Checker
An essay spell checker finds the typos that slip past you after hours of writing. Paste your essay into the box and press Check spelling. Every possible misspelling is listed once, with how many times it appears, and one click on a suggestion fixes every copy. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser, so nothing you enter is uploaded.
A long essay is checked in your browser in a single pass, and the text is never uploaded, so it is safe to use on unpublished work, a draft assignment or a personal statement. The words are not stored on a server and are not used for anything else.
The tool does not check grammar, so read the essay once more after the spelling pass. A word that is correctly spelled but wrong, such as "affect" for "effect" or "their" for "there", will not be flagged. Quotes, names and technical terms may be flagged because the dictionary is a general American English one, so use Ignore or Add to dictionary for them.
If your school requires British spelling, expect words such as "colour" and "analyse" to be flagged, and add them to your dictionary once.
How to use Essay Spell Checker
- Type or paste your English text into the box. Wait a moment on your first visit while the dictionary loads.
- Press Check spelling. The possible misspellings appear below the box, in the order they first appear in your text.
- Click a suggested word to replace every copy of the misspelling in your text, or choose Ignore to leave the word as it is for now.
- Choose Add to dictionary for a name, brand or technical term you use often. It is remembered in this browser.
- Press Check spelling again to confirm that nothing is left, then copy your corrected text.

Privacy: how it works
- Your text is checked in your browser tab and is never sent to Ulkaa or to anyone else.
- The page downloads its dictionary files from this same site the first time you use it. That is a download to your device. Your text is not part of it.
- The text box and your personal word list are saved in your browser local storage. They stay on your device. Press Clear, or clear site data, to remove the text.
Tips
- Read your text once more after you click suggestions. A suggestion can be a real word that is the wrong one for your sentence.
- Add the names of people, places and products you write often to your dictionary, so the list stays short.
- Check one section at a time for a very long document, so you can read each list of flagged words carefully.
- Use Ignore for a word you want to leave alone in this document, and Add to dictionary for one you want accepted everywhere.

Is it safe to paste my essay?
Your essay is checked in your browser and is not sent to Ulkaa or anyone else. The text box is saved in your own browser so a refresh does not lose it, and Clear removes it.
Will it catch grammar mistakes in my essay?
No. It checks spelling only. Read the essay through yourself, or use a grammar tool, for mistakes in the words that are spelled correctly.
How long an essay can I check?
There is no set limit, because the checking runs on your device. A very long text may take a moment. For a book-length text, check it a chapter at a time.
