This mixed number calculator adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides numbers like 2 1/2 and 1 3/4. Type each with a space between the whole part and the fraction. For 2 1/2 + 1 3/4 it returns 17/4, shown as the mixed number 4 1/4. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser, so nothing you enter is uploaded.
The method is to convert each mixed number to an improper fraction, do the arithmetic, then convert back. 2 1/2 is 5/2 and 1 3/4 is 7/4. Over the denominator 4 they are 10/4 + 7/4 = 17/4, and 17 ÷ 4 is 4 remainder 1, so the answer is 4 1/4.

Tips
- Write a mixed number with a single space between the whole part and the fraction, as in 1 3/4.

- If you want a rounded decimal for a calculation by hand, read it from the repeating form and cut it where you need.
- To check an answer, the Compare mode shows two fractions over one denominator, which is the same test teachers use.

How do I add mixed numbers?
Convert each to an improper fraction, add them over a common denominator, then convert the sum back to a mixed number. Or add the whole parts and the fractions separately and carry if the fractions total more than 1.
How do I type a mixed number?
Write the whole part, a space, then the fraction, for example 2 1/2. A negative mixed number starts with a minus sign, as in −1 1/2.
