About MLA 9 Website Citation Generator

This MLA website citation generator opens on the website source type in MLA 9, so you can cite a web page from its author, page title, site name, date and link. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser, so nothing you enter is uploaded.

An MLA web entry gives the author, the page title in quotation marks, the website name in italics, the publication date, and the URL without the https:// prefix. The access date is optional in MLA 9. The generator adds it only when you fill in the Accessed date field, which is worth doing for pages that change.

If a page has no named author, leave the author rows empty. Check that the output starts with the title, which is the MLA rule for a work with no author. The generator does not read the web page, so copy the details from the page.

How to use MLA 9 Website Citation Generator

  1. 1Choose a citation style from the list: APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago notes, Chicago author-date, Harvard, IEEE or Vancouver.
  2. 2Choose the source type: book, journal article, website, book chapter or report. The fields change to match.
  3. 3Add the authors, one name per row. For an organisation, put its name in the last-name box and leave the first name empty.
  4. 4Fill in the title, year, publisher or journal details, and any DOI or URL. Type titles in the capitalisation your style needs.
  5. 5Copy the reference or the in-text citation. The copy keeps italics when you paste into a word processor.
  6. 6Press Add to bibliography to keep the reference in a list, then copy the whole list. It is sorted by author for author-date styles and numbered in citation order for IEEE and Vancouver.

Features

  • Seven styles: APA 7th edition, MLA 9th edition, Chicago 17th (notes and bibliography), Chicago 17th (author-date), Harvard, IEEE and Vancouver.
  • Five source types: book, journal article, website, book chapter and report.
  • The reference list entry and the in-text citation, both ready to copy, with an optional page number for the in-text form.
  • Copy with italics preserved, so a book or journal title stays italic when pasted into Word or Google Docs.
  • Several authors, group authors and editors, with the style rules for joining and shortening them.
  • A bibliography list that sorts alphabetically for author-date styles and numbers entries in order for IEEE and Vancouver, with a one-click copy of the whole list.
  • The bibliography is saved in this browser, so it is there when you come back on the same device. It is never sent anywhere.
  • DOI and URL fields, an accessed date for websites, edition, volume, issue and page ranges.

Worked examples

  • Web page with a group author, date and accessed date → gives Reference: World Health Organization. “Physical activity.” World Health Organization, 5 Oct. 2022, www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/physical-activity. Accessed 20 Oct. 2026. In text: (World Health Organization)

  • The same page with the accessed date left empty → gives Reference: World Health Organization. “Physical activity.” World Health Organization, 5 Oct. 2022, www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/physical-activity.

Privacy: how it works

  • The details you type are formatted by code in your browser tab and are never sent to Ulkaa or anyone else. The bibliography list is saved in your own browser storage on this device, and you can clear it with the Clear list button.

Tips

  • Copy details from the source itself, such as the title page of a book or the first page of an article, and not from a search result snippet.
  • Type the DOI without the web address in front of it. The generator adds the correct prefix for the style.
  • For a source with no author, leave the author rows empty. Check the result against your style, because the rule for the title position differs between styles.
  • Add each source to the bibliography as you go, then copy the whole list at the end.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no price, no trial and no credit card. Ulkaa Tool does the work with your own device, so there is no server bill to pass on to you.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and no login. Open the page and use it. An Ulkaa account is not needed for anything on this tool.

Does it run in my browser?

Yes. Your source details are processed by code running in your browser tab, on your own device.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Your source details are never sent to Ulkaa or to anyone else. You can check this yourself by watching the Network tab in your browser developer tools while you use the tool.

Do I need the access date in MLA 9?

It is optional. Add one when the page may change or has no date, and leave the Accessed date field empty otherwise.

Why does the URL lose its https://?

MLA 9 asks for the address without the protocol, and the generator follows that.
