About MLA 9 Citation Generator

This MLA 9 citation generator formats your source in MLA 9th edition, the author-page style common in the humanities and literature. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser, so nothing you enter is uploaded.

An MLA works cited entry follows a fixed set of core elements, such as author, title of source, container, publisher and date. The in-text citation gives the author and the page number, for example (Smith 45), and the generator adds the page when you fill in the page field. Two authors are joined with and, and a source with a page range shows it as pp.

MLA expects title case for titles, so type each title with its main words capitalised. The generator uses the title as typed. The access date is optional in MLA 9, and the generator includes one only when you fill in the Accessed date field.

How to use MLA 9 Citation Generator

  1. 1Choose a citation style from the list: APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago notes, Chicago author-date, Harvard, IEEE or Vancouver.
  2. 2Choose the source type: book, journal article, website, book chapter or report. The fields change to match.
  3. 3Add the authors, one name per row. For an organisation, put its name in the last-name box and leave the first name empty.
  4. 4Fill in the title, year, publisher or journal details, and any DOI or URL. Type titles in the capitalisation your style needs.
  5. 5Copy the reference or the in-text citation. The copy keeps italics when you paste into a word processor.
  6. 6Press Add to bibliography to keep the reference in a list, then copy the whole list. It is sorted by author for author-date styles and numbered in citation order for IEEE and Vancouver.

Features

  • Seven styles: APA 7th edition, MLA 9th edition, Chicago 17th (notes and bibliography), Chicago 17th (author-date), Harvard, IEEE and Vancouver.
  • Five source types: book, journal article, website, book chapter and report.
  • The reference list entry and the in-text citation, both ready to copy, with an optional page number for the in-text form.
  • Copy with italics preserved, so a book or journal title stays italic when pasted into Word or Google Docs.
  • Several authors, group authors and editors, with the style rules for joining and shortening them.
  • A bibliography list that sorts alphabetically for author-date styles and numbers entries in order for IEEE and Vancouver, with a one-click copy of the whole list.
  • The bibliography is saved in this browser, so it is there when you come back on the same device. It is never sent anywhere.
  • DOI and URL fields, an accessed date for websites, edition, volume, issue and page ranges.

Worked examples

  • Book by one author → gives Reference: Kahneman, Daniel. Thinking, fast and slow. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2011. In text: (Kahneman 45)

  • Journal article by two authors with a DOI → gives Reference: Smith, Jane, and Rahim Uddin. “Sleep and exam performance in first-year students.” Journal of Educational Psychology, vol. 114, no. 3, 2022, pp. 456-470, https://doi.org/10.1037/edu0000123. In text: (Smith and Uddin 460)

  • Book chapter in an edited book → gives Reference: Lee, Anna. “Memory and learning.” The study guide, edited by J. Smith & A. Khan, Oxford University Press, 2019, pp. 34-56. In text: (Lee 40)

Privacy: how it works

  • The details you type are formatted by code in your browser tab and are never sent to Ulkaa or anyone else. The bibliography list is saved in your own browser storage on this device, and you can clear it with the Clear list button.

Tips

  • Copy details from the source itself, such as the title page of a book or the first page of an article, and not from a search result snippet.
  • Type the DOI without the web address in front of it. The generator adds the correct prefix for the style.
  • For a source with no author, leave the author rows empty. Check the result against your style, because the rule for the title position differs between styles.
  • Add each source to the bibliography as you go, then copy the whole list at the end.
