Simultaneous Equations Solver

Solve two equations at once and check the answer against both.

x +y =
x +y =

Integers, decimals or fractions. A dependent system gets a parametric solution.

Solution

x=2y=1\begin{aligned} x&=2 \\ y&=1 \end{aligned}xy=2=1

Steps

  1. 1Write the system
    {2x+y=5x−y=1\begin{cases} 2x+y=5 \\ x-y=1 \end{cases}{2x+y=5x−y=1
    ↓
    [2151−11]\left[\begin{array}{cc|c} 2 & 1 & 5 \\ 1 & -1 & 1 \end{array}\right][211−151]

The augmented matrix [A | b] holds the coefficients on the left of the bar and the constants on the right.

  2. 2R1 ← R1 ÷ 2
    [2151−11]\left[\begin{array}{cc|c} 2 & 1 & 5 \\ 1 & -1 & 1 \end{array}\right][211−151]

    [112521−11]\left[\begin{array}{cc|c} 1 & \frac{1}{2} & \frac{5}{2} \\ 1 & -1 & 1 \end{array}\right][1121−1251]
  3. 3R2 ← R2 − 1·R1

    ↓
    [112520−32−32]\left[\begin{array}{cc|c} 1 & \frac{1}{2} & \frac{5}{2} \\ 0 & -\frac{3}{2} & -\frac{3}{2} \end{array}\right][1021−2325−23]
  4. 4R2 ← R2 ÷ -3/2
    [112520−32−32]\left[\begin{array}{cc|c} 1 & \frac{1}{2} & \frac{5}{2} \\ 0 & -\frac{3}{2} & -\frac{3}{2} \end{array}\right][1021−2325−23]
    ↓
    [11252011]\left[\begin{array}{cc|c} 1 & \frac{1}{2} & \frac{5}{2} \\ 0 & 1 & 1 \end{array}\right][10211251]
  5. 5R1 ← R1 − 1/2·R2
    [11252011]\left[\begin{array}{cc|c} 1 & \frac{1}{2} & \frac{5}{2} \\ 0 & 1 & 1 \end{array}\right][10211251]
    ↓
    [102011]\left[\begin{array}{cc|c} 1 & 0 & 2 \\ 0 & 1 & 1 \end{array}\right][100121]
  6. 6Read the solution
    [102011]\left[\begin{array}{cc|c} 1 & 0 & 2 \\ 0 & 1 & 1 \end{array}\right][100121]
    ↓
    x=2,  y=1x=2,\; y=1x=2,y=1

The left side is the identity, so the last column holds the solution.

About Simultaneous Equations Solver

This solver handles simultaneous equations, two linear equations in two unknowns that must both hold. Enter the coefficients of 2x + y = 5 and x − y = 1 and it returns x = 2 and y = 1. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser, so nothing you enter is uploaded.

By hand you would choose substitution or elimination. Substitution solves one equation for a variable and puts it into the other. Elimination adds or subtracts the equations to cancel a variable. Here, 2x + y = 5 plus x − y = 1 cancels y at once: 3x = 6, so x = 2, and then y = 5 − 4 = 1. The solver uses the matrix form of elimination, Gauss-Jordan, so every case is handled the same way.

Always substitute your answer back into both original equations. Here 2(2) + 1 = 5 and 2 − 1 = 1, so it holds. A solution that fits only one equation is wrong. For three unknowns, use the 3 variable solver instead.

How to use Simultaneous Equations Solver

  1. 1Pick a type: Linear, Quadratic, Cubic, Polynomial roots, 2 equations, 3 equations or Discriminant.
  2. 2For a single equation, type it in the box using ^ for powers, such as x^3 - 6x^2 + 11x - 6 = 0. The type is detected from what you enter.
  3. 3For a system, fill the grid with the coefficients and the constant of each equation, in the order x, y, z, constant.
  4. 4Read the roots or the solution at the top of the result.
  5. 5Open the steps to follow the working, and look at the graph to see where the curve meets the axis.

Features

  • Linear, quadratic, cubic and higher-degree polynomial equations in one variable, with the degree detected automatically.
  • Quadratic roots with the discriminant shown and explained, including complex roots in the form a + bi.
  • Exact rational roots shown as integers or fractions, such as x = 1/2, and exact radical and complex roots such as x = 1 ± √2 or x = −1 ± 2i.
  • Cubic and higher equations solved by the rational root theorem, reducing the degree step by step, with a numeric fallback when no rational root exists.
  • Cubic discriminant reported, so you know whether to expect three real roots or one real and two complex.
  • Systems of 2 and 3 linear equations solved by Gauss-Jordan elimination, with the augmented matrix and each row operation typeset.
  • Detects systems with no solution, and gives a parametric solution such as x = 2 − t, y = t for systems with infinitely many.
  • Brackets, fractions and rational equations through the expression engine; values that make a denominator zero are excluded.
  • A graph of the left side minus the right side with the real roots marked, which you can zoom, pan and export.
  • A standalone discriminant mode for b² − 4ac.

Elimination in one line

Add or subtract multiples of the equations so that one unknown cancels, solve for the other, then back-substitute.

(2x + y) + (x − y) = 5 + 1 → 3x = 6 → x = 2

Worked examples

  • 2x + y = 5 and x − y = 1 → gives x = 2, y = 1

    Adding the equations gives 3x = 6. Then y = 5 − 2(2) = 1.

  • x + y = 3 and 2x + 2y = 7 → gives No solution

Doubling the first equation gives 2x + 2y = 6, which contradicts 7. The lines are parallel.

Privacy: how it works

  • Equations are solved by code running in your browser tab. They are not sent to Ulkaa or anyone else, and there is nothing to sign in to.

Tips

  • Brackets, fractions and rational equations are accepted, so (x + 1)(x + 2) = 0, x/2 + 1 = 4 and (x + 1)/(x - 2) = 3 can be typed as they are.
  • Move nothing yourself: write the equation as you have it, with terms on both sides if needed, and the solver collects them.
  • Use a decimal or a fraction for coefficients, such as 0.5x + 2 = 5 or 1/2x + 2 = 5.
  • In the system grid, leave a cell blank for a zero coefficient.
  • For one variable, the equation can use x or any single letter, but only one letter per equation.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no price, no trial and no credit card. Ulkaa Tool does the work with your own device, so there is no server bill to pass on to you.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and no login. Open the page and use it. An Ulkaa account is not needed for anything on this tool.

Does it run in my browser?

Yes. Your equations are processed by code running in your browser tab, on your own device.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Your equations are never sent to Ulkaa or to anyone else. You can check this yourself by watching the Network tab in your browser developer tools while you use the tool.

What are simultaneous equations?

They are two or more equations that share the same unknowns and must all be true at once. The solution is the set of values that satisfies every one.

Should I use substitution or elimination?

Either gives the same answer. Elimination is quicker when the coefficients line up, and substitution is quicker when a variable already has a coefficient of 1.
