Convert MP4 to GIF free: no sign-up, no upload
Convert MP4 to GIF free. There is no sign-up or login, no watermark, and nothing is uploaded, because your files never leave your browser. It turns a short MP4 clip into a looping animated GIF you can drop into a chat, a document or a web page.
GIFs still win where a video will not play by itself: chat apps, emails, forum posts and slide decks. People convert a reaction clip, a screen recording or a short demo so that it moves automatically without a play button.
GIF is a very old format and it has real limits. It holds at most 256 colours per frame and has no sound, so photographic video looks grainier and the file can become much larger than the MP4. This pair uses the ffmpeg engine, so the first conversion asks for a one-time download of about 31 MB. Short clips give a smaller, cleaner result.

About GIF
GIF stores a sequence of frames with a palette of at most 256 colours. It supports simple looping and basic transparency but carries no audio. It is widely supported, which is its whole appeal.
MP4 vs GIF
An MP4 is almost always far smaller and sharper than a GIF of the same clip, and it keeps sound. A GIF is only the better choice when the place you are posting to needs a file that animates by itself. Many sites also accept MP4 for looping clips, so check first.
What is lost
Sound is dropped, because GIF cannot hold audio. Colours are reduced to a 256-colour palette, so gradients may show banding and skin tones can look rough. Long or high-resolution clips produce very large files.
Privacy: how it works
- Your videos stay on your device. The page reads each file with the browser's file API, converts it with code running in the tab, and hands the result back as a download. No upload happens, so there is no copy of your file on our servers to protect, delete or leak.
- There is nothing to sign up for and no login. The converter does not ask for an email address, and it does not need to know who you are to do its job.
- Some conversions use a WebAssembly engine that your browser downloads once, the first time you need it. Only the engine is fetched, never your file, and the page shows the approximate size before it starts. Your browser caches it, so later conversions skip the download.
- You can check the claim yourself: open your browser developer tools, watch the Network tab while a file converts, and you will see no request that carries your file.
- The engine is fetched once and cached. The clip itself is processed inside your browser and is never sent anywhere.
Tips
- Keep the clip to a few seconds. File size grows quickly with length.
- Trim the video before converting if only a moment matters.
- Screen recordings with flat colours look much better as GIF than photographic video.
- Lower the size or frame rate options if the result is too large to share.
- Check the GIF in the place you plan to use it, since some apps limit GIF file size.
- Keep the original MP4. It is the better copy.
Frequently asked questions
Is it really free?
Yes. There is no price, no trial, no credit card and no watermark added to your results. Ulkaa Tool does the conversion with your own device, so there is no server bill to pass on to you.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Your videos are read and converted inside your browser and are never sent to Ulkaa or to anyone else. The result is created on your device and you save it from there. Some conversions load a small conversion engine the first time you use them. That download is the only network traffic, it contains no file of yours, and your browser keeps it for next time.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up and no login. Open the page, add your files and convert. An Ulkaa account is not needed for anything on this tool.
Is there a file size limit?
No limit is set by us. The real limit is your device: the conversion uses your own memory and processor, so very large files can be slow or fail on a weak phone or an older computer. Close other heavy tabs and convert videos one at a time if a big batch struggles.
