About Pivot Table Maker

This pivot table maker is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser, so your spreadsheet is never uploaded. Choose a CSV, TSV or Excel file or paste cells, pick which column becomes the rows, which becomes the columns and which holds the values, and choose how to aggregate them.

The result is a table with a Total column and a Total row, ready to copy or download as CSV. It opens on a sample of sales by region, product and quarter so you can see a result straight away, then switch the fields to explore the data from another angle.

You can sum, count, average, or take the minimum or maximum. Totals are worked out from the original rows, so an average total is the average of every row, which is not the same as the average of the cell averages.

How to use Pivot Table Maker

  1. 1Choose a file or paste your cells under Paste or upload data. The first row must hold the column names.
  2. 2Pick the Rows field: its values become the row labels.
  3. 3Pick the Columns field, or (none) for a single value column.
  4. 4Pick the aggregate and the Values field to summarise. Count does not need a values field.
  5. 5Read the table with its totals, then copy it or download it as CSV.

Features

  • Sum, count, average, minimum and maximum.
  • One row field and an optional column field, with a Total column and a Total row.
  • CSV, TSV, XLSX, XLS and ODS input, read in a Web Worker.
  • Labels sorted naturally, so 2 comes before 10 and (blank) is last.
  • Totals computed from the source rows, not from the cell results.
  • A count of rows skipped because the value was not a number.
  • Copy as CSV or download.

Worked examples

  • Sum of Amount by Region and Quarter (sample sales) → gives East 28800, North 28650, South 28500, West 28650; total 114600

Each cell adds the Amount values of the rows with that region and quarter. The row totals add across quarters.

  • Average Amount by Region → gives East 4800, North 4775, South 4750, West 4775

The average is the sum of the amounts divided by the number of rows in the region.

  • Count of orders by Product → gives Laptop 8, Phone 8, Tablet 8

Count counts rows. It does not read a values column.

Aggregates

AggregateWhat a cell showsNeeds numbers?
SumThe total of the values in the groupYes
CountHow many rows are in the groupNo
AverageThe mean of the values in the groupYes
MinimumThe smallest value in the groupYes
MaximumThe largest value in the groupYes

Good to know

Why an average total is not the average of the averages

If one group has 2 rows and another has 20, their averages should not count equally in the total. The total of an average pivot is the average over every row. For minimum and maximum the total is the smallest or largest of all rows, which equals the smallest or largest cell.

Text in a value column

Sum, average, minimum and maximum need numbers. A cell holding text, such as "n/a" or "$1,200", is skipped and the page says how many rows were. Clean the column first with the data cleaner, which turns $1,200 into 1200.

Privacy: how it works

  • Your table is read and summarised by code running in this browser tab. It is not uploaded or stored.

Tips

  • Pick fields with few distinct values for rows and columns. A column field with hundreds of values makes a very wide table.
  • Use Count with a text field to see how often each value appears.
  • Dates summarise better once they are grouped, for example as a month or quarter column added to the source data.
  • Blank labels are grouped under (blank) so those rows are never dropped.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no price, no trial and no credit card. Ulkaa Tool does the work with your own device, so there is no server bill to pass on to you.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and no login. Open the page and use it. An Ulkaa account is not needed for anything on this tool.

Does it run in my browser?

Yes. Your table are processed by code running in your browser tab, on your own device.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Your table are never sent to Ulkaa or to anyone else. You can check this yourself by watching the Network tab in your browser developer tools while you use the tool.

How do I make a pivot table from a CSV file?

Choose the CSV file, pick a Rows field, optionally a Columns field, an aggregate and a Values field. The pivot table appears at once with totals, and you can download it as CSV.

Can I make a pivot table from an Excel file?

Yes. XLSX, XLS and ODS files are read in your browser. If the workbook has several sheets, choose the one you want.

Can I use more than one row field?

Not in this version: there is one row field and one optional column field. To summarise by two fields, put one in Rows and one in Columns.

What does Count do?

It counts how many source rows fall in each cell. It does not need a values field, and it counts rows even when the value column is blank or text.

Why are some rows skipped?

Sum, average, minimum and maximum can only use numbers. Rows whose value cell is blank or text are skipped, and the number skipped is shown under the table.

How are the totals calculated?

From the original rows. A row total is the aggregate of all rows in that row label, a column total of all rows in that column label, and the grand total of all rows.

Can I refresh the pivot when I change the data?

Load the new data under Paste or upload data and the table is rebuilt. There is no link to a spreadsheet, because nothing leaves your browser.

Can I turn CSV into JSON here?

No. Use the file converter at /file/converter/data to convert between CSV and JSON.
