About Text Summarizer
This text summarizer is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser. Paste an article, an essay, meeting notes or a chapter and it picks the sentences that carry the most weight, keeps them in their original order and highlights them in your text.
The default method is extractive and instant. It uses TextRank: every sentence becomes a node in a graph, sentences that share words are linked, and PageRank scores how central each one is. The top sentences become the summary. It needs no download and works in any language that separates sentences with punctuation, including Bangla, where the danda (।) ends a sentence.
There is also an optional abstractive mode. It downloads DistilBART CNN (284 MB, from Hugging Face), which writes new sentences instead of copying yours. It is English only, works best with a WebGPU browser, and can state things the text did not say, so check its output against the original.

- Choose a paragraph or bullet points.
- Read the summary, and see the chosen sentences highlighted in your original text below.
- Copy the summary with the copy button.
- Optional: switch to the AI rewrite, confirm the 284 MB download, and tap Write summary.

How TextRank picks sentences
Two sentences are similar when they share content words. The similarity is the number of shared words divided by the sum of the logarithms of the two sentence lengths, as in the original TextRank paper (Mihalcea and Tarau, 2004). Common words such as "the" and "and" are ignored first.
PageRank then scores the graph: a sentence is important when many important sentences are similar to it. The highest scores are kept and shown in the order they appear.
similarity(a, b) = shared(a, b) / (ln(|a| + 1) + ln(|b| + 1))
score(i) = (1 - d) / n + d * sum over j of w(j, i) / sum(w(j, *)) * score(j)
d = 0.85Worked examples

Extractive versus abstractive summaries
An extractive summary only copies sentences from your text, so every word in it is yours. It cannot invent a fact, but it can read choppy and it can pick sentences that depend on context you left out, such as "This is why it matters".
An abstractive summary is written fresh and reads more smoothly, but the model can drop an important point or add a detail that is not in the source. DistilBART CNN was trained on news articles, so it does best on news-style English.
Privacy: how it works
- Your text is processed in your browser and is not sent to Ulkaa. Only if you choose the AI rewrite, the model file is downloaded once from Hugging Face; your text is not sent there.
Tips
- Use a percentage for long documents and a sentence count for short ones.
- If the summary opens with a sentence that starts with "However" or "This", raise the length by one so the sentence before it is included.
- Text with no punctuation, such as a transcript, has no sentences to rank. Add full stops or line breaks first.
- Each line break also ends a sentence, so bullet lists in your source are treated as separate sentences.
Frequently asked questions
Is it really free?
Yes. There is no price, no trial and no credit card. Ulkaa Tool does the work with your own device, so there is no server bill to pass on to you.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up and no login. Open the page and use it. An Ulkaa account is not needed for anything on this tool.
Does it run in my browser?
Yes. Your text are processed by code running in your browser tab, on your own device.
Is my data uploaded?
No. Your text are never sent to Ulkaa or to anyone else. You can check this yourself by watching the Network tab in your browser developer tools while you use the tool.
How does the text summarizer work?
It splits your text into sentences, links sentences that share words, scores them with PageRank (TextRank) and keeps the highest-scoring ones in their original order.
Can it summarise Bangla text?
Yes, with the instant method. It splits on the danda (।) and compares words, so no model is needed. The AI rewrite is English only.
Is the AI summary accurate?
Not always. A model that writes new sentences can leave out an important point or state something the text did not say. Check it against the original before you rely on it.
Why does the AI mode need a 284 MB download?
The model runs on your device instead of a server, so its file must be downloaded first. The tool shows the size and waits for your confirmation. It comes from Hugging Face, and your browser may keep a copy.
Do I need a fast computer for the AI mode?
A browser with WebGPU is strongly recommended. Without it the model runs on the CPU and can take a long time on a long text.
How long can the text be?
The instant method handles long documents. The AI mode splits a long text into chunks of about 600 words and summarises each, then joins the results.
How is reading time worked out?
Words divided by 238 words per minute, the average adult silent reading speed for non-fiction found by Brysbaert in 2019. It is an average, so treat it as a guide.
Can I get bullet points?
Yes. Choose Bullet points under Output and each chosen sentence becomes a bullet.
